In general, Desktop studies provide information about geology, hydrogeology, and physical settings of the site.

Desktop studies can provide an initial understanding of a subject or situation, identify potential risks and inform the detail, scope and methodology of subsequent investigations.

A desktop study is likely to be less time consuming and less expensive than a physical investigation.

A involves collecting all available existing information for the site (or adjacent or nearby property), including maps, reports, rainfall data, historical information (e.g., from newspapers or the internet), photographs, and any previous site or construction plans. This information is compiled and sorted to provide an initial overview of the site conditions. If enough detail is available about the subsurface materials, the information can be used to accelerate and/or supplement the planning of subsequent investigation and subsurface exploration.

Site visits (or reconnaissance), if necessary and possible to visit, allow engineers to get a better "feel" for topography, local geology, vegetation, and other aspects of the location and surrounding areas such as access, site preparation needed, workmanship surface conditions, available utilities, existing infrastructure, and so on.

Geomorphological Interpretation using Satellite Imagery & DEM Data

One of the works that will be carried out in the desktop study is Geomorphological Interpretation through Satellite Imagery & DEM Data.

Thus, the geological aspects, topographic characteristics, hypsometric analysis, and geomorphological characteristics of the study area will be analyzed and explained by DEM data, and multi-temporal remote sensing, multi-sensor, multi-spectral & multi-remote resolution.

Based on the digital elevation model (SRTM-DEM, ASTER-DEM) data, Landsat images and 1: 50,000 data Topographic map data, comprehensive analysis and geomorphological and topographic studies of the study area are carried out using tools such as data pre-processing, interpretation, and mapping, on software platforms including ER Mapper (ERDAS Imagine), Global Mapper, ESRI ArcGIS, and Quantum GIS which helps more lots of good choices for visualizing terrain and mapping.
